An amazing display of stupidity! Your son should pursue this through due process via the school district (or above as the case may be).
It would be interesting to be a "fly on the wall" at the first meeting to discuss the incident. Just imagine, the administrator standing up to introduce him/herself with the appropriate handshake offer - and the well deserved response that would probably follow.
Jim nailed it with the term "vortex of stupid"! Being the mother of an exceptionally bright (and equally problematic) child, I have seen the lows of the American school system. Both in Seattle, and here in Boise where I now reside. I'm probably on the other end of the spectrum,though, since I still don't understand the appeal of the local hunting passtime and disapprove of guns in general. But I try not to judge people without learning more about them and certainly wouldn't ban my child from playing next door without good reason.
At least in Seattle basic spelling wasn't a challenge. I'll never forget walking into my son's soon-to-be second grade school and finding numerous grammar and spelling errors all over the materials displayed on the walls. Not from the students, mind you, from the TEACHERS. It was in this same school that my son's - very young and inexperienced - teacher felt that he needed remedial instruction, for a child who had tested with an IQ of 137!
Catering to the lowest common denominator is absolutely rampant in this country and is certainly not limited to California. And, lest we forget, I believe this is MaaMaw's home state?
