That was the whole problem as I see it. The newsletter did not cater to your client's needs. They are your web design/programming clients, they don't really care about how to build better sites. What they would be interested in, though, would be information on what things will help them to get the most out of their website that you made for them. And when you tell them what they can do to get the most out of your site, that is when you can sell them more services from yourself or recommend other products/services that will help them get the most out of their site.

What you did was analogous to a person who has a site that sells beginner guitars then sends newsletters out to his customers and subscribers on how to sell guitars. They aren't interested in selling guitars, they are interested in learning to play them. Just like your web design clients - they don't want to know how to design a site better, they are interested in how to make their website work for them and how it can help their business.

I agree that perhaps there are cases where a newsletter/mailing list might not help a person's business, but I also believe that you have to know how to use a list properly in order to get anything out of it and make it worth your while.
