I think that the "genius" behind it is actually quite simple but twofold...
1. It's not an ebook. It is a tangible item that has to be shipped to you and it is large so that makes it look more legit than some non-existent ebook that you can get for a penny everywhere as download.
2. It is huge so it is a hassle to return, somewhat. Especially lazy people (the biggest market for this type of product) with a revolving line of credit. They are too lazy to actually use the info to make money and they are surely too lazy to repack it and take it to their shipper.
I think it definitely was good idea that they made it spiral bound. Still convenient like a bidder but not so convenient to be stolen (copied). Again, those lazy folks need everything to be easy.
Personally, I would rather have a download simply because once you're done reading it, it's much easier to go back and find one part you want to go over again by using the "find" function in the PDF rather than having leaf through and find that exact part you were looking for.
