Great ideas, thanx!! The problem is...

In Response To: a few notes about shipping (Terry)

I am not good at knowing what will sell at a profit and what won't, which is why I can't really risk paying somebody's shipping (or taking a loss on shipping) at this point. I need to learn more before I do that.

> If people here are telling your shipping is too high, then potetial buyers

YOU said that :-)

here

whereupon I freaked out (just a little)

here

> You've done a great job of explaining why you ship that way and how it
> benefits the buyer.

> Put that language in your shipping statement.

That's what I've done in my last few auctions (none of which have sold so I don't know if it's making an impact or not).

> Buyers do factor in the shipping cost in their bids.

Oh my yes! And there's nothing I hate more than being ripped off on shipping. I won't buy if it looks like a rip-off.

> This means that items
> with low value and high shipping cost are not approproiate for eBay.

Here's where I get confused. If you start with an opening bid of $.99 but then have a (pefectly legitimate ACTUAL) shipping cost of $15, does that turn people away -- or does the fact that your Buy Now price is much higher offset that impression somehow?

I love all the examples you gave -- thank you :-)

> I once had a case of oil cans. Small cans of household oil from Esso brand
> new in the carton. Like 3 in 1 oil. I sold each can on eBay and got 60-150
> dollars a can for the first half dozen. The last two went for 6 and 9
> dollars each.

This is the kind of thing I find really discouraging -- the fact that I know NOTHING about (antiques?). I'm reading and reading but it just isn't soaking in. It isn't my thing, so I have to look elsewhere.

I really believe the people making big bucks are the people selling antiques and collectibles -- somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Luv,

MaaMaw

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
