Steve left a legacy, like many other environmentalists. He taught us about things stranger than fiction sometimes, encouraged us to see other creatures as having unique capabilities and so on but there it stops.
Or does it? Didn't he also teach that ampromorphizing other creatures to the point that we assume they think and act as WE would deem appropriate according to our viewpoint, is reckless and imprudent, to put it mildly?
If he had not invaded another creature's domain and gotten too close for comfort so the stingray felt threatened, would he have not taught something even better? How about respect for the other creature and respect of their territorial rights? Basic survival for any creature and he violated that first rule of survival. It is no wonder that, sooner or later, things turned nasty.
From another aspect, how about thinking first of HIS responsibilities to the children he left behind and fatherless? I get just a tad impatient with men who think nothing of their life to the point of recklessly endangering it, without due care and thought to their other responsibilities. Now anyone can get into unpredictable circumstances but to deliberately court danger without thought of the ones left behind is, IMHO, irresponsibile. You don't have to walk on eggshells through life to be responsible...just use common sense...which, as we all know, isn't that common.
Steve was an extraordinary man in many ways, and he will be missed by many. My prayers for comfort and help go out to his wife and children.
