Since the company that your husband worked for is a major company, if you have the company handbooks, look in them for terms of dismissal.
I would also press hard for a written documentation of why he was fired. Is your Husband over 40 years of age? If so, an age discrimination factor may come into play.
You and your husband sit down and write out all the details, while they're fresh in your mind. Write all of what was said, to the best of his and your recollection. Write down everything, what He said, what She said. That document will come in handy if there are grounds for a lawsuit.
Did your husband miss much work prior to your illness? If not, gather the paycheck stubs showing the hours he worked, along with your doctor's appointment dates. If he didn't miss work except to take you to the doctor, those will provide a paperwork trail.
Contact your local EEOC office. They have government lawyers there that will take your case for free if they feel that your husband was discriminated against.
Document everything you can. Even though you reside in a right-to-work state (which means, like you said, that they can fire a person for just about anything) there are government restrictions and regulations concerning worker's rights under federal law.
Usually an employer's representative (your husband's boss) that does not know the law, will violate an employee's rights unknowingly, leaving the company liable to a large government-sponsored lawsuit.
If there are grounds for a lawsuit, the EEOC will let you know. One word of advice: The company will first try to settle out of court. The MINIMUM cost of an employer defending a discrimination lawsuit is $150,000 dollars. Keep that in mind when settlement time rolls around.
I'd tell you my story, but I don't want to bore everyone. Just realize that I am speaking with the voice of experience. Take all this advice and follow through.
