I use different methods, depending on what, exactly, I'm trying to do.
For backing up files and small folders, I've used 100 megabyte ZIP disks. They're relatively expensive per megabyte but they seem to work well, and they're as re-writable and editable as any hard drive. Just make your copies, erase old copies, edit and so on, and don't worry too much about it.
For backups of files that don't change much, such as your photos and music, CD-R and DVD-Rs are hard to beat. Big capacity and long shelf life if you treat them right. Just copy the files and store away til later.
For the major full system backup, an external hard drive is the only way to go. I use a Maxtor 100 gigabyte drive here, it came with "One Touch" backup software that makes backup relatively easy. It uses a USB2 port and that makes it fast too. I'm using this drive as a devoted-to-backup-only drive, so when I'm not using it for that purpose it's turned off. That protects the backups from any virus that might get in between system maintenance runs (I always run disk cleaning, antivirus and antispyware programs before doing a backup).

Oh, yes. Before I forget, welcome to the club. For some reason, most of us don't do backups nearly as often as we should. Even experts who should know better have a habit of letting backups slide. So, you're no worse in that regard than most of the rest of us.
