Hi, Michelle,
Backing up can be a pain until you develop a method that suits you. Yes, if you want to be able to write again on the CD you need to buy the CD-RW type of CDs, not CD-R type. CD-R is once and done. CD-RW you can write over (but not too often).
To be able to do what you'd like to do, you'd be best to have 3 CDs in rotation. Backup to CD 'a' the first time, to CD 'b' for the next backup, then go to CD 'c' for the third back up. Then begin at CD 'a' again. This way you'd always have TWO copies of your files in case one got corrupted somehow. One would be older than the other but at least it is better than no copy, right?
Frankly, there are much better ways to backup a hard drive. One you might consider is using Acronis. With Acronis you can back up to virtually any medium, including your existing hard drive. It will create a separate partition for the same-drive backup.
One of the best, so I've heard, is to backup to a removable hard drive. The only risk is during the time the drive is in your computer...otherwise, it's a very safe method. You can treat it just like any other hard drive as far as backing up and erasing ect.
An external drive, such as Maxtor, that works through your USB port is a good choice. I'd recommend Nero, or the aforementioned Acronis, for the backup software. Some externals come with software but make sure you know how they work before using as some will erase your previous backup and then write the new one. If something doesn't backup right, you've lost it.
Thumb drives (small USB plug in drives) are another option, of course. You can treat them pretty much like any drive...add...delete...do incremental backups or full backups. Just make sure your thumbdrive has sufficient space to handle your backup. Microsoft backup used to tell you what you needed for a specific backup but not sure if XP does anything like that or not.
Since you have XP Home, I'm hoping you made the initial full backup according to instructions. Keep that...it's all you have if you need to wipe and reinstall your system for any reason.
Hope this has been some help. I'm sure others will fill in any gaps I've left.

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
