Hi All,
Ok, I know this is terrible of me, but I don't regularly back up my files. As I working on my writing business, I know I could be in a WORLD of hurt if my computer crashes for whatever reason.
But I'm having trouble backing up my files. I bought a 10-pack of generic writable CD's from Office Depot. They are Office Depot-brand CD's. I want to copy everything from the My Documents folder to the CD. I store everything of any consequence there.
Trouble is, the folder's too big to put on the CD. Ok, I can go through and pick and choose what to put on the CD. No problem.
BUT...
I know we're supposed to back up every day. The problem is, I need to overwrite the files every day -- I don't need multiple copies of the same documents. Only, it won't let me overwrite them. It just adds the edited documents to the CD. So if I'm working on a business proposal document and I edit it, I end up with two proposal documents: the original and the edited version.
Arrgggh!
It won't let me delete the files once I've added them either. It only lets me add to the CD until it's full.
I was just going through the My Documents folder and there is a TON of stuff there. I need all of it, though some things I'm not using right now.
So can someone explain how to back up files and documents? I need to be able delete unnecessary files and folders from the CD and overwrite current documents with the edited and updated versions.
Did I buy the wrong CD's? Am I not formatting it correctly since it puts the documents on there as read-only files and then it doesn't let me delete them from the CD? Or edit them? I don't need a ton of CD's with different versions of My Documents on them strewn all over my desk.
BTW, I have Windows XP Home Edition. Per instructions I found on Microsoft's Web site, I open up My Computer from my desktop, right-click on My Documents and click on the disk drive E from the pop-up menu and click "Copy."
Then I go into that drive, select the folder and then select "Copy these files to disk" from the drop-down list on the left-hand side.
I'm NOT a techie at all, but I'm not stupid either. Saving a document, file or folder should be no different than saving it on my hard drive. but somehow, this is NOT working. Help!
Thanks!
Michelle

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
