I wish I'd listened to my own advice ... that's a different story, though.
30 people - presumably a little capital available amongst you all ... a need to display your arts and crafts ....
Well, I'm not much in favour of government by committee BUT I know of two fantastic businesses in Scotland which started in a similar fashion (and I'm sure there are many more.) Approximately 20 years ago, a group of farmers wives started baking scones and selling them from a "garden shed" of a coffee shop on a busy main road. Now they've a beautiful, quality coffee shop with a FANTASTIC gift shop - they also sell quality clothes, Scottish foodstuffs, alcohol and more.
The key to their success, as far as I can see is the location:
- Busy main road in a spot with good visibility.
- Safe access to the site with separate on and off ramps. In other words, the cars come in one entrance and leave at a different exit.
- Close to a town so that it's not difficult to find staff
- Plenty of good parking - and some space to expand when the business starts to prosper.
That's what we should have done when we started in business. We're in a town setting with no place to expand and parking's a nightmare! So, if you know of a small-holding for sale on the best highway in your area, on a level piece of ground, that's the place to start!
