It ends up not mattering if you're in good health or not. It matters that most women 50-ish and above have health problems that creep up at that "special" time in life. The insurance companies are hedging their bets, and it's really not the insurance company's fault as much as it is the fault of the pricing in the healthcare system. (IMO) I don't know if health care costs are overpriced, but I think there most certainly are inefficiencies in the system that cause higher prices.
I do find it an interesting topic to discuss. I think lots of self-employed folks believe they're overpaying for insurance. And I hate it when I hear those who "can't" afford it, when it is really (for them) a choice not to afford it.
Here's a great example: I have a client w/ HIV. He has been on antivirals for many years and is in good health otherwise. His medication costs $1,000 a month. The medication that keeps him alive, essentially. His health insurance fully covers the medication, and his premium is $800 per month. He thinks he pays too much. Hello???? Not only do we have to pay insurance based upon our OWN risk, we have to pay extra for those who have illness which cost more than the premiums they pay.
So just my thoughts. No real right or wrong on the insurance issue. Other than Socialism doesn't work and I don't believe that we should have federally funded healthcare. Everyone thinks that would be great because someone else would be paying the bill. Unfortunately the someone else is all of us, and the government has a history of being completely inefficient, so our costs would likely be ridiculous.
