OTOH, you can pick up the book and take your time looking through it before you decide to buy it. And a lot of technical books will have some way of directly contacting the author.

The link (below) is a good example of how I like to see a site. He has tons of samples (accessible down the right side of the page), an e-mail series where you can get a feel for his style of writing, and a "Contact the author" link at the bottom. And from personal experience, I know that the author is extremely responsive and caring. I, too, wish that every site was like this.
