Individual emails are NOT spam. Never have been, never will.
They may be unexpected, and might (in case the current owner is not the former owner) generate a gripe or two, but I don't know of any provider who will nuke if the emails are personalized and not sent in bulk. How would you ever tell your correspondents if you changed addresses? (It *is* better to not reintroduce yourself to your list by trying right away to sell them something!)
Nobody wants to make it impossible for an old girlfriend to send an email, for instance. If the situation is right and no other relationships are in the way, you might even get back together.
So the nature of spam is that it needs to be bulk AND unsolicited, not just unsolicited. And usually the recipient is hard-pressed to prove bulkiness, which is why it's up to the ISP who gets the complaints to weigh how many complaints they got against the sender's history. One complaint is typically dismissed as a hair-trigger anti-spam crank. We're NOT all hair-trigger anti-spam cranks, you know.
