BTW, the link now points to some sort of forum and not a "crash course."
Here's the link to the "crash course:

Red Flag #1. This means they can play any sorts of games with your cash and you probably can't figure out if it's fair or not. "Three Card Monty" shell game? Who knows... but notice that the type of businesses we discuss here have a very simple model -- I sell product, the profit ALL comes to me minus the costs of my materials.
> Whadya think?
* We've seen the "pay the reader to read ads" model before (remember? Lots of folks here got involved in the "they pay us to surf" biz about 5 years ago. Went belly up within 6 months in spite of the fact that a lot of fairly heavy hitters were doing it.
* The ads are going to be posted on the YMMSS site. Not on Google, not on CNN, not on FIB, etc. On the YMMSS site. Color me thrilled. So in the case of one of my upcoming projects (small press minicomic) I can pay $10 to have my ad appear there for one day and if I convince others to join after 18 months (maybe) I will get $300. Orrrr... I can buy space in convention program books (highly targeted advertising) at conventions where I'll be attending for $10-$100/page. Previous experience shows that this strategy can double my table sales so that the same wekend I spend that money, I get it all back plus a whole lot more. If I bring along my business card with a URL, then the cards plus the ad will increase my sales at ALL comic book conventions I attend for the next 3 months.
There are highly effective places to advertise. FIB gets a gazillion more hits than YMMSS does.
Methinks this is a "no brainer."
* The ads are not targeted to a particular demographic (beyond people who want to surf in to be paid for clicking.)
* I know that "reading clicks" translate to "people leaping to find something cheap and quick and they will surf to earn but they won't buy." Remember? That's what crashed the other model (remember? A bunch of us predicted this.)
* People go to a site if there's attractive and sticky content or if it's selling something they SPECIFICALLY want/need.
"Changing Cycle Times" http://www.workathomenetwork.com/scam-or-not-updates.htm In the comic book and putlishing industry and other industries, the ONLY time a cycle of payment changes is if the company doesn't have enough revenue. And this is a sign of a business going belly up.
* I also don't see any ads up. Now... it would take me about an hour to toss an ad up on my own website and link to it through a sigfile. That's free, I don't pay anyone for anything, and I don't have to wait and have it appear for only one day.
I could go on, but I honestly see no reason to waste money and effort. Remmeber what Cory says... you need your OWN product and you need to put your own ads in targeted locations (I don't know if he said that, but I keep saying that.)
I think that if someone wants to join it, they should. But frankly you'd do better spending that money on lunch or putting it in a savings account.

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. Although we may, from time to time, monitor or review discussions, postings and the like on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, we are under no obligation to do so. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
