Hi, Christine: Hope you and your familiy are doing well.

That's great that you love animals. My family and I love dogs and cats; we have 1 dog and 2 cats. My dog passed away last october and I haven't had the heart to get a new dog, yet.

But anyway, regarding your question about affiliate programs. If you do not have your own product and/or service, then Yes, I would go with an affiliate program. Linkshare and Amazon are good ones to start with. Both have pet merchants that you can affiliate with. But before you go join these programs, keep in mind that some merchants will not approve you as an affiliate if your website is not "live" meaning it has to be up and running. Therefore the first thing you might want to do is register a domain name and get it hosted. Pick a domain name that you like, preferably something that has to do with animals or pets. My businesses end in .com simply because most people remember .com and most people assume your website ends in .com.

Now regarding domains and hosts. First off, I would not recommend going with a free website. You will most likely end up with a domain name such as "myfirstsite.yahoo.com". Many people will not take you seriously. You can get registered and hosted for under $70.00 per year. I use Globat to host and Godaddy to register simply because they filled my needs. Start with http://www.free-webhosts.com/domain-name-registration.php; this will give you and idea of various packages and pricing for domain names. You can also do a search on your favorite search engine for "compare domain name registrants".
For hosting you can start with http://www.comparewebhosts.com/default.asp?aff=DG
and then look at their "Small Business Hosting" section and their "top 10 Web Hosts" for more information. Some hosting companies will provide you with free setup fees and free domain names, such as iPowerWeb and 123CheapHosting. You can also go to http://reviews.cnet.com/Web_hosting/2001-6540_7-0.html?tag=topnav and click on "Host power search". Here you can pick and choose some options to search for.

The reason I chose Godday for domain name registration is simply because I have done business with them before and I like their reponse and support. I chose Globat for hosting because they worked well with perl scripts that I needed to install, their offerings fit into my budget and plans, and their service and response has worked well for me in prior dealings with them so they were a known hosting company for me.

To recap for now:
1. Pick out a domain name. Remember, many people will search the engines and then click on a link but many other people will remember your domain name but not the extension, such as .net or .com. They will enter your domain name directly and assume it is a .com. At least that has been my experience. Oh, by the way, keep away from domain names that end in .us. The NTIA (National Telecommunications and Information Association) has ruled that domain names ending in .us can no longer be privately registered. If you own such a domain, ownership of such a domain must be disclosed by January 2006 or you forfeit your domain. Now, why am I telling you this? Because, some domain name registrants allow you to set your domain name ownership as private, such as Godaddy. All my domains are .com and are private to protect my privacy.

2. Get your domain name registered.

3. Get your domain hosted.

When that is all done, the next step is to build your website. I will send another response to you regarding building your website, ok?

patti

ps: by the way, you can also do a search for "animal affiliate programs" and/or "pet affiliate programs". Make sure you do your due diligence and research companies you might want to associate with; ie, their background, history, reputation, etc.

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
