The difference in MLM business models and ordinary business models

In Response To: "All companies are MLM" - propaganda trap (POS-Andrew)

Let's clear up some misconceptions, eh?

I write books and magazine articles. I have had a book published. Here's how the chain of money goes:

The publisher prints the book. They resell to jobbers at about 30% of the cover price (about a 10-15% profit.) The jobbers sell to distributors at about 50% of the cover price (10-15% profit for them.) Distributors sell to stores at about 60% of the cover price (10-15% profit) and book stores sell at 100% the cover price (about 20% profit when it all works out)

Now... here's how that works under MLM:
Publisher prints the book. They resell to "top line"
"top line" sells a few books but then sells the "opportunity" to second tier.
"second tier" sells a few books and sells opportunity to third teir.
"third tier" sells a few books and sells opportunity to fourth teir.
"fourth tier" sells a few books and sells opportunity to "fifth tier"
"fifth tier" sells a few books and sells opportunity to "sixth tier"
... and so on in an endless chain. And every book that sells (that 80% profit, remember) gives a kickback of 5-10% to the upline. All the way up.

There comes a point when that profit getting to the top is just about zero, so the MLM starts "restructuring" the payment plan. Notice that nobody's getting the 20% that the original model provides to the resellers. Notice that the original model says that "if you earn it, you can keep it."

There comes a time when you pay out so much in compenstation to a huge downline that NOBODY gets any mone. You can't pay a downline of 10 people 20% of a product's cost. That's about twice the cost of the original product and you're losing money fast (which is why a lot of MLMs collapse quickly.)

If everyone gets 20% of the previous person's sales, then there comes a point when tht 20% equals a few pennies.

And remember there's no limit to MLM downlines. If you can get a downline of 50 people, you can do that.

Dennis (with his resales) is essentially acting as a jobber in the first model and not as an MLM downline.

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
