Billboarding, Fake Identities, and Other Nasties...

fall under the heading of Exploiting This Board and my Board Buddies for personal gain, and it won't be tolerated.

Well, to be fair, it has *never* been tolerated... but sometimes I slack off because life, homeschooling, and earning a living get in the way. SHAME ON ME for being asleep at the switch for the past couple of months!

Yesterday I told you that I had uncovered what looked, to me, like a "questionable" situation with a popular poster here at FIB -- whose name shall remain nameless not because of any threats (there have been none) but because of my desire not to provide any further free publicity (since all publicity is good publicity).

Since then, I have received a pile of emails from said Popular Poster, alternately...

FORGIVING ("I don't blame you for being angry. It's just occuring to me how you think what you think.")

BLAMING ("My first instinct was to retaliate... But I'm trying to not... publically embarass you...)

INSULTING ("I am not desperate enough for sales so as to waste all my time posting on a board as small as this under a dozen different user names... Don't flatter yourself. I got very little in sales from your site. Most people there are too scared and broke to do much of anything.")

DENYING ("I am not love2write, callie or any of those others with my supposed IP number")

EXPLAINING ("I thought about who would have to most to gain and who would have the computer skills to pull this off. We talked to our IT man today and he tells us that to him it looks like someone infected our system with spyware and is piggy-backing on our IP... The only way to deal with it he said is to wipe everything from our computer and at this time that is just not feasible for us to do. Maybe during the holidays at years end we will be able to do it but right now we are too busy using it as our digital darkroom."), and...

MAKING VERY LITTLE SENSE ("Earlier this year, xxx 'sold' her xxx to her 'graphics guy' in exchange for a fully functional website... as soon as the agreement was signed he turned nasty. Some ten months later and the website has never been completed... Now in setting up xxx's so-called website - we had to give this guy our IP number.") (I can't for the life of me imagine why you would have to provide your IP# to get a website built, but I never claimed to know everything.)

Some things add up

(i.e., I believe there is someone trying to stop Popular Poster from selling one of his products).Many things don't

(e.g., "my supposed IP number" followed by "piggy-backing on our IP," wherein ownership is acknowledged).

I'm not stupid.

I know this board doesn't bring in oodles of sales -- but it brings in some, and it creates inbound links, and the posts show up in Google for years to come.

I'm also not interested.

I am not interested in getting to the bottom of the bzillion details with which I have been bombarded. I have no more time to pursue this. Duty calls (and this ain't it).

Suffice it to say:

Billboarding is not allowed. (That's short for turning everything into a sales pitch and posting only when you have something to peddle.) (Whereupon Popular Poster jumps in and says he always tried to help people here and he gave them free products, etc. Whereupon I jump in and say, "I don't deny that you did that; it's why you did it that bothers me, and where it led tells me my concern was justified.")

Links at the bottom of posts are always welcome (well, almost always).

If you're answering a direct question (that you didn't post under an assumed name and you didn't get your grandma to post it), you are welcome to answer the question with a reference to your own product, just as you would be welcome to answer it with a reference to someone else's product -- as long as the answer is relevant.

I still ask that you not link to affiliate products that compete with my affiliate products, because I have to earn a living just like you do. (The list is outdated, but not to worry; if you make a boo-boo, I will let you know quietly and behind the scenes.)

Articles are not allowed.

Ads are not allowed.

IN SUMMARY:

Almost every person here is trying to sell something, and that's just dandy -- but the board has survived and thrived becuse of the people who are not only peddling their wares but are here because they WANT to be here.

If you think the people here are "too scared and broke to do much of anything," then you shouldn't be here.

Back to the situation at hand:

Whether or not a Sinister Third Party posted leading and direct questions under seven different names, the fact remains that the rules were disregarded on many occasions by said Popular Poster, who repeatedly posted articles and blatant ads... which I stupidly let slide because of a false sense of gratitude (which, as shrewd Popular Poster pointed out, is my own problem).

I'm done.

I'm dusting off my wrecking ball, knocking down all the billboards, nuking all the fake posts (no matter who posted 'em), and resuming Life As It Was.

Like I said yesterday, 2 + 2 keeps adding up to 7, and I never signed on to be Judge Judy.

Rules were broken intentionally and repeatedly. This is what I know.
