In some cases it might matter, that's for sure. But I think in other cases like the one mentioned by BN, it matters very little. What Dr Laura advises is neither right nor wrong, it's just a matter of preference and opinion. A PhD even in religion does not even make a difference in her case.
I listen to AM radio everyday and one of the shows I listen to sometimes when other shows are not interesting is the Dr Laura show. I love to listen sometimes merely because I love to hear how many people will call, knowing how she is, expecting some miracle to happen and she will tell them exactly what they want to hear, which is the easy way out. Uuuuhhhh...heeeeellllllooooo? Have you never heard the show before you called in??!!!
People call her for moral guidance and all she can do is give them the guidance she like to give. Which, IMO, is usually good advice, although impractical for many who actually call her for advice. But hey, no one asked them to call and no one is forcing them to act on her words.
But anyhow, in the area of moral guidance, Dr Laura certainly does dish out a heaping helping of good advice for those that want it. It matters not what her PhD is in or whether or not she is a black belt, unless, of course, she is lying about all of it or using it to make herself seem legit. And to the best of my knowledge, Dr Laura has never once used her PhD as a reason to listen to her advice and live by it nor is she lying about having a PhD, having a Black Belt, or being a licensed therapist, even though all of those things mean nothing in her situation.
We all can provide moral guidance if we want to. But she just so happens to have a radio show that you can call into for fr''ee guidance. You don;t need a license or a degree to give moral guidance. At least, not that I know of.
