I had an artist friend with exactly the same situation

In Response To: Great marketing opportunity for me here what would you do (Carla Ball)

Here's what he did: He took preliminary sketches and worked on them (colored on them) while he was sitting around and waiting to be called. You have to do something while you wait, and there's no rules against having graph paper there and doing layouts for future pieces or sketches for future pieces.

EVERYONE snoops when you're drawing or coloring! My experience is that when I sit down at a sales table I will get more sales if I have something I'm working on (we're not talking about tripling my sales, but there certainly is a noticeable difference.) Layout for jewelry is another attention-getter. If your contract runs near holidays (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Mother's Day) then do work on holiday related jewelry or glass for about 3 weeks before that holiday. People buy a lot of roses for Mother's Day and flags and patriotic colors for Memorial Day and 4th of July, so take advantage of the season.

A word of caution -- DO be a bit coy. Don't have everything with you on the first day. If people show interest, say "Would you like to see photos of some of my work? I'll bring them tomorrow." My friend likened it to a strip tease... you don't show off everything at once but sustain a level of interest by drawing and coloring every day. He sold some of his cartoons to the stars of whatever Western it was that he was an extra for.

BTW, Crayola just came out with a line of "eversharp" colored mechanical pencils that are GREAT when you're coloring. Although they're not as bright as prismacolor, they make a fairly strong color and since they're a mechanical pencil, you don't have to carry around an annoying pencil sharpener. And they're cheap! I got mine at Office Depot. ( http://www.crayolastore.com/product_detail.asp?T1=CRA+68%2D7418 )

They're great for project planning and are solid enough that I've colored a few cartoons with them (and sold the cartoons.) I'm going to experiment with using acetone blenders on them. We used to do this with Prismacolor pencils and got a lovely, translucent, permanent color that you could then color on top of or use with a scratchboard technique.

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
