Two weeks ago, I got notification that I was accepted into the PhD program for Information Sciences at the University of North Texas. My proposed dissertation is on how disabled people find out about technology and how they use it in their lives. You see, some folks seem to hunt up and adopt high tech stuff and others don't, and if we knew who was a good candidate for this (and how they find out about it), we can help folks.
Because there's a pilot program to get Segway scooters into the hands of a few of the soldiers coming back from Iraq who have been maimed and who can't walk well now. And it's my thought that if we can figure out how to match people with tech that works for THEM (and how they find out about this tech), then... well, it wouldn't cure the world but some people could have a better life.
Right now, I don't know nuffin'. Totally clueless (and I'm scrambling for funds to pay for this degree.) But this summer and continuing on until I get that degree, I'll start posting research proposals and any of my academic conference papers on the topic (I will have to produce several academic papers over the next 4 years) on www.melwhite.com (don't go look at it now because there's nothing there.) I'll also post links to papers that relate to the topic of what I'm studying and probably links to the devices as well.
I'll also post calls for "help, I need people to talk to so I can understand your side of things" there, too.
I don't know if any of it will be of any use to you, but I mention it just in case. (I'm such a bleeding-heart tree-hugging liberal hippie... I really am!)
And that's all I had to say on the subject, other than Keep Your Chin Up, Kiddo! Keeping an active circle of friends and family members is very good for your health.
