I'm not sure why it took me so long to think of this, but I just decided to compare two ALMOST IDENTICAL pages on my site (the facts aren't identical, but everything else is).
On a Google search for "indian elephant," I come up #8.
On a Google search for "african elephant," I come up #146.
The number of search results are pretty close -- 3,400,000 and 3,900,000.
Each page has the search term on it five times, including once in the title tag.
The pages are identical in format, length, amount and relevancy of content, etc.
David, the creator of the site, completed the pages in order, so I have reason to believe they have both been online the same amount of time.
Any changes I made to one I made to the other at the exact same time.
Between the good "african elephant" entries near the beginning and mine on page 15, there are TONS of totally crappy sites.
The difference?
None that I can see.
Now here's something interesting: As far as I can tell, David knew absolutely *NOTHING* about internet marketing or SEO -- yet some pages have achieved #1 and #2 on Google, and dozens are in the top ten.
I'm going to quit worrying about it.
I'm going to get Mr. Giraffe just the way I want him (I'm adding a bunch of printable activity pages, a "Honorary Zookeeper" certificate, a web research guide, etc.) -- then I'm using that as a template for the other hundreds of critters and trying to keep my mind off the SEs except to try to get some incoming links. (I'm thinking about a blog to help with this, but the very idea gives me a toothache.)
I'm not suggesting anyone else give up on SEO, but after making the above comparison, I really think one's time can be better spent.
