First, this Isidore of Seville person has actually created a really *useful* directory site (at least on my topics) -- a rare treat when you're used to getting software-generated crap everywhere you look.
Anyhoo, I am painstakingly writing to every copyright holder for permission to use their animal photos, which seems like the right thing to do and I'll keep doing it.
That's for the photos I actually put on my OWN pages (i.e., I have a main giraffe photo, then I have three thumbnails that open up supersized giraffe photos I actually put on my own website).
But look what Isidore did -- a page of thumbnails -- I LOVE IT!!
It's something I had thought of doing (witness the little thumbnails at the bottom of my giraffe page), but I couldn't face the idea of contacting dozens or perhaps hundreds of photographers on each critter which would add up to tens of thousands of photographers for the whole zoo which would take the rest of my natural life...
But look at it!... It's SO MUCH better than the text links I'm using to send my visitors off to look at great giraffe photos...
I went hunting to find out if he had permission to use every one of these thumbnails, and at the bottom I found this copyright notice:
"The thumbnails above are subject to their original copyright. They are provided to bring users to the site they come from. (This technique is used by a number of prominent image search engines.) To remove an image, write..."It's true... thumbnails pop up on the search engines, just like he says.
Do you think this is kosher??

P.S. HAH!! Every idea, every question, raises a new dilemma for my obsessive-compulsive mind to struggle with. This one is, "Tell me again why you want to send people away from your site?" Answer: "Because, you ninny, you're trying to provide the BEST, most comprehensive, most interesting Giraffe Experience on the net, and that means sharing the good stuff... besides which, it opens in a new window, and of course your Adsense clicky-doodles will be there...."
