NO, you don't lose these emails, you simply have to look in your spam folder and then whitelist the addresses you want the spam blocker to stop filtering out as spam. You can still read a message that gets tagged for spam (and then whitelist it).

I have and I still say get a spam filtering software, learn how to use it and get on with life.
You're talking to a person that gets a minimum of 120 spam emails per day. There are things you can do (small things) to help reduce the amount of spam you get, but you slways still need a filter.
Small thing #1: Get a free email address at Yahoo or anywheree else reliable and use that email address strictly for purchases over the internet and even phone. Everytime I bought something over the internet, I noticed that I got spam from related sites selling the same kinda stuff I just bought. Get a free email account for purchases only and you will see your main email account reduce in spam. HOwever, if you have never done this then it would be wise to change your main email address as it is already on a dozen of "mailing" lists. the spam will keep coming at this point, that's why.
