I'm responding to this because a lot of what you're saying is exactly what I'm trying to be all about.
> In a nutshell: UCE (or spam) works, so it won't go away by forcing the

I believe educating potential victims is more effective than targeting victimizers.

I'm having a hard time getting people interested in ethics. It's much more boring than money. I'm finding that people do get excited about scams, so I'm trying to subtly open people up to thinking about exactly why something is a scam. For example, I just wrote something about how Charles Ponzi had nothing but satisfied customers when he got busted for mail fraud. Maybe this will change someone's mind somewhere down the line.

The way around this is to have separate lists for your newsletter, sales (special offers, etc), affiliates, and every other aspect of your business. If a person opts into all of these things it's hard for them to complain about getting too much email. Of course, most companies don't do this. My Web host, ItsYourNet, does.

Many successful people have started by earning respect before they sold a single thing. This is even considered a proven strategy in quite a few Internet marketing courses. It suits my personality so that's what I'm doing.

I'm not sure "search engine spamming" is possible. Maybe you're talking about ridiculous amounts of link exchanges and things like that. I recently wrote an article about a site selling an ebook about basset hounds. This site has 30 pages full of links, and a lot of the links are to stuff like "Angela Basset" and "Basset Furniture". My final conclusion in the article was that yes, this is somewhat sleazy, but not more than any other form of advertising.
Another interesting tidbit of info is that Search Engine News, the #1 source of SEO info (that I know of), has their own ebook, the title of which is "Unfair Advantage". The only reason it's unfair is that people who don't pay for the research don't get the advantage.
Despite this, Search Engine News is actually doing everyone a service, including the search engines. They're stomping on supposed SEO techniques that frustrate the search engines and waste the time of webmasters and customers. They're mostly saying what the search engines themselves are saying: Quality of content is important, and is judged by relevant links. The unit of relevancy is the page, so your entire site might have lots of different pages and still get ranked highly overall. Search engines will get better and better at punishing sites for links that aren't relevant, especially link farms. People who do right by the search engines will be rewarded.

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
