FIB - Scams 101 - Ye Olde Archives
Posted By: The Tim <tim@thetimtimes.com> In Response To: Yes, Tim... I'm "in on it" -- in fact, I'm the brains behind the whole operation.... (MaaMaw)
Tuesday, 21 June 2005, at 8:58 a.m.
I expect the scammers are going to go on with their ad hominen attacks because they have a vested interest. I know you do not (the $30 doesn't count against you in this instance but I did get your attention). What I have a problem with is the LACK OF LOGIC AND THE USE OF LOGICAL FALLACIES to support what is OBVIOUSLY A SCAM.
I'll admit I get snarky with you sometimes. It's for the same reason (or should I say LACK OF). You have heard about logical fallacies haven't you?
http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/
The use of logical fallacies seems to be standard operating procedure with scammers. These scammers are playing word games. And I'll give you SPECIFIC eDAVE examples (let me add a small caveat here --- eDave may not be aware he's doing this and you seem to be a big fan of his so I'll tread lightly):
1. I never saw a response to the Ebay question. eDave said something yesterday about Ebay. Ebay doesn't have anything to do with ecurrency. I did a search and posted the ZERO search results (my post was zapped). eDave was doing the classic name dropping of a successful operation in trying to equate that with this scam. We've ALL SEEN IT DONE over and over.
2. eDave "For those of you (like The Tim) who are bit slower than others, this is when a person has money in one ecurrency and needs to exchange it for another ecurrency."
Except that we've not yet identified exactly what ecurrency is suppose to be in the FIRST place, so explaining it in terms of exchange isn't helpful, but if you don't pay attention you might think he actually answered the question! I see this 'circular logic' permeates scammer explanations. Now I'm not saying the eDave IS A SCAMMER, but he's certainly picked up the vernacular quite well.
3. eDave "I'm certainly not foolish enough to believe that DXInOne.com will continue to do business forever, but it's very easy to understand the service they are providing today"
Conclusion without ANY SUPPORTING explanation. It's EXACTLY the reason this keeps coming up. Nobody has a clue as to what's actually going on. To wit see the next UNANSWERED QUESTION (not from me in this example, but still relevant)
4. Riddle me this - But if I go to the site which I presume is about this, and look at one of the e-currencies: http://www.dxcurrencies.com/online-currency-statistics/STM.php
Exchange rates from the past 30 days, vary by more than a factor of 10 ($1.99 @ 22-28 days ago, to $20.04 @ 8-14 days ago).
Now the question is WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF A TEN-FOLD MOVEMENT????
Never answered, and considering eDave says "It's very easy to understand...." is there any reason that we shouldn't be skeptical (I might remind you that this IS SKEPTICS PARADISE AFTER ALL !!!)
5. Another question not from me that NEVER gets answered: > What is the product or service that is generating the money to be paid out
> to all these people?
6. This is CLASSIC eDave stuff here..."You go into a bank or other business that does currency exchanges, and YOU PAY A FEE for making the swap.
There are a bunch of other ecurrency exchangers out there. Oddly, nobody seems to be questioning or investigating these....
We all know CURRENCY EXCHANGE is legitimate. First eDave tries to draw an illegitimate parallel between a real business function and his imaginary one, but the lack of prosecution of these ecurrency scams IS NOT PROOF OF LEGALITY, Furthermore, it's the USE OF THIS PARTICULAR TYPE of example that ought to raise red flags!!!! Maybe if these 'operations' weren't housed in some offshore Aruban account we'd see more prosections?!! There are a few of us here with institutional memory of MANY SCAMS. I wish I had a dime for everytime a scammer used the "WELL WE HAVEN'T BEEN SHUT DOWN...."
Hope that is 'gentle' enough criticism for your sensibilities. I'm just trying to JUMP UP AN DOWN to keep people FROM MAKING A FOOLISH mistake. Some people find that kind of behavior admirable.....some obnoxious....guess it depends on where your bread is being buttered??
Enjoy.
> You really are an idiot, aren't you?

> 3. I can't understand the need for exchanging e-currency, because it seems

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. Although we may, from time to time, monitor or review discussions, postings and the like on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, we are under no obligation to do so. We are not responsible or liable for any claim arising from the content of any such discussions or postings or for any error, defamation, libel, slander, omission, falsehood, obscenity, pornography, profanity, danger, or inaccuracy contained in any information contained within such locations on the Site. You are prohibited from posting or transmitting any unlawful, threatening, libelous, defamatory, obscene, scandalous, inflammatory, pornographic, or profane materials or any material that could constitute or encourage conduct that would be considered a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability, or otherwise violate any law. You are likewise prohibited from posting any false claims against any company or individual. We will fully cooperate with any law enforcement authorities or court order requesting or directing us to disclose the identity of anyone posting any such information or materials. By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example. You grant Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications complete, perpetual, but non-exclusive rights to use, archive, reproduce, adapt, modify, distribute, sub-license, repurpose, rework, compile, or offer for sale or resale the messages, postings or content appearing on this site in whole or in part, throughout the world and universe, on a royalty-free basis without remuneration. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
