Yeah, he's a college grad. He's talked about being in school in various messages over the past year or so.

Unlike folks who work as waiters and bartenders, the job pool is smaller.
In the professions that require college degrees, it's not "walk out with your diploma and people are hanging around the gates of the university, waiting to glom onto you and offer you jobs." Quite often, we need to take some sort of temporary position while waiting for the job to come through (it takes, on average, about 100 rounds of sending resumes to get 3 decent interviews, and it takes about 5 interviews to get a good job... depending on how much of a demand there is for your profession.) If there's little demand for your profession in the local area, then you have to adopt other strategies or move (not always possible if you have family and an employed spouse at a job they like with good pay and good benefits.)
I've got to go through this kind of rounds myself starting in August and expect it'll take till December to find a job for myself in the area (but could take longer.)
For the college grad with some entrepreneurial skills and some ambition, starting a little side business while waiting for the job to come through is a LOT more satisfying than sitting home and watching daytime tv and collecting unemployment.
