I assume you can still get on the Internet...or you couldn't have posted this.
First thing I would do is install Microsoft's anti-spyware.
After you install it, re-start your computer in safe mode. This keeps the crap from interfering. In safe mode, run the microsoft anti-spyware. After you get rid of everything (the adware, spyware) re-start your computer in normal mode.
Are you using a firewall? How about an anti-virus program? If not, go to Zone Labs and get a free copy. There's also an online scan at that link...you may want to try it.
For a good anti-virus, go to AVG anti-virus for a free copy.
BUT, if you're using McAlfee or Norton, you'll have to uninstall them before using AVG.
Those three, Zone Alarm, AVG, and Microsoft anti-spyware have kept my system trouble-free.
And for goodness sake, stay out of the bad internet neighborhoods. LOL.
One more suggestion, if you're using Internet Explorer, fire it. I use a IE-based browser called Avant that allows more security, like blocking pop-ups, active-x controls, and such. Or you could try Firefox. The new Netscape is supposed to be the most stable version yet.
It won't hurt to download all 3 and see which one you prefer. I have 6 browser versions installed on my system, for checking compatibility.
It's a shame that Microsoft has provided a fantastic anti-spyware program...but left Internet Explorer full of holes and security risks.
