The only thing that comes to my mind is that there are too many "temporary" files eating up system memory and resources, especially if it's an older machine with smaller memory and disc space.
I used to go in weekly and manually clean all the "temp" files out. It took about 30 minutes or so, and really got tedious after a while. But when I noticed my machine slowing down, I knew it was time to clean it up.
Every time you browse somewhere you pick up all kinds of temporary files. Your browser stores the places you visit in "cache", which allows your browser to load a previously visited website quicker. But after a while, the "temp" files can really slow your systeem down.
I found a nifty little utility called iI System Wiper that will cleanup these files. You can set it up to run automatically on start-up or shutdown. You wouldn't believe all the applications that write to your Temporary folder.

The price is right, it's F-R-E-E and IMHO, is worth it's weight in gold.
Personally, I couldn't get along without it. (well, I COULD, but it would take a lot of time to do what this utility does in a few minutes)
