Dave,
My first suggestion is "don't put your email address on your website". Use a "contact form". However, if you wish to do so, there are javascripts that you can use to "encode" your email address so the spambots don't find it, yet it "looks" and works normal when someone clicks on it. I don't have the sites immediately available, but you can do a search for "email javascript"... I'm sure you'll find a site for the script that you can copy and paste into your webpage. Of course, this will only help slow down the spambots. It won't do anything for those that manually harvest your email from your website (which is painfully slow, but does happen).

This response is also in regard to a previous post ( http://friendsinbusiness.com/board1/index.cgi?read=92189 ) about
"domain registration anonymizers" and causing a "red flag" for business' integrity.

I've had a website since 1996 (internet infancy) to promote my "real-live" business (not a web-based business). I have watched the spam issue grow. Of course, I had my email address posted (not any more, I don't) and of course, I get LOTS of spam... along with viruses attached, bounced messages due to spammers using my email address and just about anything else you can think of.
In an effort to reduce this (in addition to utilizing a different email address), I now use a "Contact" form on my website using a Formmail.PHP script. I do NOT publish my address on my site either (although I note that it will be provided upon request... "USE THE CONTACT FORM"). Also, I now use a domain registration anonymizer because emails are also HARVESTED THROUGH "WHOIS" (who woulda thought they'd look there?).

If someone wants to contact me, the can use the Contact form or call me on the phone (yes, the number is on the website). YEP! We still use the phone as a means of communicating (yes, I know it's a bit antiquated, but it works).

The "red flag" theory is not something that I'm going to worry about. The thing that bothers me more is my email address being used to spam others and filling up my inbox with junk to sort through, while I'm trying to find the few legitimate ones. (I'm still in the long process of converting those to the "newer" email address.)

Just my 2 cents worth...
Jim

PS. You might want to go to www.ientry.com to look for that javascript. They have all kinds of newsletters about "web" design, seo, etc. A great wealth of information.

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
