Now, I do it in a physical format (not e-format) and I do it at science fiction conentions. Many of us at these events are small publishers -- I've seen sales of several thousand per weekend.
It is, of course, a lot of hard work drawing and writing the zines and keeping the name in front of the public and so forth. But I can say it was the steadiest side income that I've ever developed.
These aren't Ebay saleable, but if you develop a series the previous books sell the next books and the new books drive old book sales. I haven't bothered to put up a sales site on Internet for this, but others have Cafe Press material and paperback books (through Cafe Press or another on demand printer) available. You do need to know your market and where to sell to the market and you do need to have at least 2 new books a year (and an imprint or certain type of book that you do.)
But this has provided a side income for more than 20 years.
