Some of my local politicians think that it might be a great idea to actually rent such things as:
- the sides of school busses
- library computers and table tops
- and believe it or not even the sides and backs of police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks
- road maintenance equipment
Who are they considering renting the space to?
Local businesses willing to pony up enough money to make it worthwhile. The plan essentially calls for those businesses to essentially pay for the vehicles and equipment the ads are placed on.
The irony is that these same politicians passed a no billboards law not that long ago.
Our fire department isn't targeted as one of the municipalities that would have the ads. (thank goodness....I mean what might be next, ads on our bunker gear and uniforms?) But the union of one of the departments that is looking into this is fighting it. The concern is that the vehicles would look less like emergency vehicles and it is already hard enough to get people to move out of the way.
As for the library computers and the other equipment, they are already testing it. There are bumper sticker ads on many of the road workers' vehicles already. From what I have heard thus far the ads aren't bringing in customers; the businesses that bought into the idea are using the monies spent essentially as donations to the cities involved.
I guess it's a big no-no until and unless big brother says it's ok....
