If you're on a Windows system, this professional spam-fighter recommends installing Spam Pal.

Free, configurable, and it works by analyzing the SOURCE IP of the spam, and comparing it to dozens of configurable blocklists. If you have no customers or prospects in Korea, Taiwan, or China - you can safely nuke ALL email that touched those countries last. The vast majority of it will be spam.
There is a thriving user community with forums. There are third-party free plug-ins that extend it into body content filtering (including Bayesian filtering which is the latest buzzword).
There is basically no reason to ruin your life worrying about spam as an end-user with a free tool like Spam Pal out there. I installed it on my wife's systems, and almost no spam ever slips through to annoy her. And I recommend it to everyone with a lame ISP that does no effective filtering on their own.
