Uh, huh. I'm not so sure about that last. The reason is that I've seen incidents of spammers registering just for the privilege of spamming a board.
Seriously, most registration schemes merely require you to have a live email address for the purpose of receiving your username/password/activation codes. After the spammer receives these and activates his membership, he can dispose of the email addy as easily as you discard a piece of paper. Then, he posts several spam messages in quick succession, gets the usual flames from other board members and disappears into the Cyberslime from which he came.
Of course, some spammers are just plain clueless. One guy on another board I frequent which requires quite a strict registry/membership just to see the board started posting help-wanted messages all over the boards. Of course he got flames like crazy, and this came as a complete shock to him. After a running battle of about a week, he finally figured that his help-wanted ads weren't welcome there and he left both the boards and the club.

Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.
