What about the "Creative Commons License" ??

I'm finding that bzillions of photos in Wikipedia are covered by this "Creative Commons License" and offer different "degrees" of "permission for use."

The ones that got me all excited are the most GORGEOUS animal photos you can possibly imagine -- all covered under the "Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License," which means I can use them as long as I give credit as specified by the creator.

OH RAPTURE!!!

Rapture short-lived!!

According to its critics (who are everywhere), "Creative Commons" was invented by a professor at Stanford and can't possibly protect anybody if challenged.

Besides which, they always say credit must be given in a manner specified by the photographer -- but nobody ever specifies how they want their photos credited! (Seems like a nasty little loophole to me... "You didn't give proper credit!")

And furthermore, I found some beautiful pictures taken at the San Diego Zoo. The photographer clearly states on his site that you can use the images for any purpose under the terms of this Creative Commons license -- but I thought images taken at a privately-owned zoo could NOT be claimed or sold or given away, and I have to wonder if the photographer chooses to use this license so he isn't illegally claiming copyright -- and, if I use them, whether my hiney would be in the same sling as his.

And double furthermore, on the Creative Commons website, some of the photographers listed have standard copyright notices (i.e., you cannot use these images without specific written permission) on their own websites (to which CreativeCommons links). Very misleading (or at least confusing).

I'm very confused and ferociously spitting poisoned pomegranate seeds at Wikipedia right now.

Maybe I'm reading more into it than there is and I should just use the bloody things...

But it makes no sense to me that someone (professor or not) can just "make up" a new copyright license, and a big site like Wikipedia would have no problem jumping on the bandwagon.

Sadly, the many "educated critics" see it pretty much like I do, from what I've found so far.

Anybody have experience with this??
