Hi Tom,
Michelle has given an excellent starting point - know what type of writing you want to do. From my own experience, this is critical.
I thought I wanted to write romance novels. (Don't laugh, people writing them are cleaning up!) I bought books, mainly from/through writer's digest, and learned about how they're structured.
Know what? I couldn't even stand to read the things! Writing them would have been a tremendous chore!
I think your niche is technical writing. With your computer background you'd have an edge, I think. Technical writers are a scarce commodity. I think back to the documentation I've gotten with some computer parts - motherboards, in particular - and realize just how scarce and necessary technical writers really are.
Technical writers produce everything from computer manuals, brochures, and the like to office procedures, specifications for machinery, etc, as well as web content, courses, etc. for corporations. (I get a big laugh when I see people advertising 900 PLR articles a month. The quality is . . . well, it isn't, actually, and they're filling up the web.)
There's a society of technical writers website on line, and I they even recommend some courses.
