I'm not real techie either but I have learned a few things along the way. If the programs are installed, it shouldn't be any problem. I don't know XP that well at all so I can't say about the other ones. Someone like Mel might be more help than me on that score.
I can draw a comparison here but not sure how valid it would be. I have Win 98SE and I can reinstall windows without harming anything so, if that holds true for XP, you should be fine. Your decision.
I'm not sure whether XP has the equivalent to run SFC (system file checker) or not. If so, you might try running that. It would at least identify the file(s) that are corrupted, if that's the problem.
Other info that may help: You do realize that the firewall that is provided with DSL does not protect you or your machine, right? You really need a good, free-standing firewall such as Kerio. Zone Alarm has been having problems lately so I've heard so I won't recommend that for now at least. My son was using ZA and switched to Kerio after he got a nasty trying to install that got past ZA (he caught it in time). I assume you have a good anti-virus such as Eset's NOD 32 on your system.
One other thought: you might want to use Firefox since it has a way to block popups and is more secure than Microsoft.
