I haven't read all the posts, but I didn't think most hosts charged that kind of money for autoresponders anymore.

There are tons of great free tools available.
There is tons of free knowledge available, but it isn't easy to sort out the good from the bad (the number of know-nothing "gurus" out there is staggering), and gathering all that knowledge, sifting through it, organizing it into some usable form, and applying it is very difficult indeed.
