I don't think I would put the AdSense right at the top ~ my first impression was that your main goal and purpose is to sell me something. I'm thinking my first impression should be that this is an info site that also offers things for sale. Put the ads down right above the photos.
The left column is really long, which results in all that white space in the center. One thing I am learning is that you want your columns even. Sorry, but this doesn't look professional.
Perhaps you could just list enough categories to make the list the right length? Like Whales, Primates, Bovines, Canines, Felines, and then African, Asian, American, whatever winds up the right length. Expand the column on the Whales page to include all the different kinds of whales, and do the same with each category. This would also eliminate having a million pages with identical content (the *list*) down the left side. Sunil might tell me I'm all wet, but I have read that *may* cause SE problems.
Hope that helps and/or gives you ideas. If I try to log back in and discover my ip address banned and my computer pitches brownies at me, I'll guess these weren't really good ideas . . . . . . .
