You can take out way more than $1500 on a Stafford load for one semester. Looking at my student load bill, I can tell you that it's WAY more than 1500/semester :(.
But do as Mel said. Get in touch with the financial aid office and apply for the Pell grant and any other grants she is eligible for. You need to take as little loan money as possible. Especially the PLUS loan which you start repaying immediately.
IMHO, you don't want to be paying for your child's education if you don't have to. Let your kid pay for it when she graduates and gets a job. That is more incentive for her to get her act together and really study something that she knows will help get her somewhere when she gets her degree. Degrees mean nothing if you don't take the initiative to get a job and many degrees mean noting at all in the job marketplace. If I had a penny for every student that gets a 4 year degree in English and is now working a job they could have gotten without a degree (like selling cellphones), I'd be rich. What did they think, they were gonna get paid to speak English or read English? Many English majors who only want to go to school for a bachelor degree are very disappointed when they get graduate and learn the harsh truth (which they knew already but were too distracted to believe it).
I could go on and on about this. Just make sure your daughter isn't going to college just "for the experience". That simply means she wants to party for 4 to 5 years and that does neither of you any good, especially if you are taking out PLUS loans and footing the bill yourself.
