What I did,...

In Response To: Video Camera Help! (DC)

I had to have a video camera capable of producing good quality video when shown at a meeting. I picked the Canon -- and what I did was buy a fairly new one from a pawn shop. It came with manuals and all, and was a brand that was available in the area (new.)

Great machine, and trouble free. I paid $200 for a camera that retails for over $300. It uses the mini-DVD casettes (higher film quality.) I also bought a tripod.

For editing, I use Microsoft's free movie editor program (Windows Movie Maker.) The price was right, it was simple to use, and it saved in a number of popular formats (I went with MP3/MP4 format rather than standard DVD format, though I could have gotten a program for that conversion for about $100.) It does fade in, fade out, slides, different types of entry points, and was (for me) pretty darn obvious on how to work.

You can try it (it's free) and if you don't like it, find something else. I've also used the Avid editor (didn't care for it), the Nero editor (ditto!), and Adobe Premiere which is marvelous and professional and will drive you crazy if it's the first editor you try to learn (very complex.)

I keep the raw data on the tapes or burn them to CD/DVD (the original raw files.) Edited files are stored on CD. I keep them in a notebook with CD insert pages (you can get this from any office supply place.)

You might also want to check into some music creating files/music looping files. Vid looks so much better when there's a little music tucked in at key parts (keep it soft or it overwhelms things.)

It's going to take you longer than you expect (better if you have a camera person. BTW, you can rent these cameras if you can't afford to buy one.) The editing will also take longer than you expect (it took me a full night to edit my first 5 minute clip (I'm also very picky and wanted a lot of "fade to black" and "fade to white" effects in a fast-moving, fast-paced music vid.)

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
