In Response To: Mel- I asked a question for you further down (Carla Ball)

There's multiple shows, and multiple websites. Basically, just google for "art show" or "craft show" or "juried art show." In my case, I google for "comic book convention" and "art show" or "science fiction convention" and "art show."

These take place all over the country, and there are multiple ones every weekend. It takes awhile to know what's the best show for you (which is why I suggest asking some of the stained glass folks.)

(actually, there's no reason that you COULDN'T send your stuff to science fiction conventions like I do... I'm just not sure what the market would be like for you. I can say that they prefer to buy stuff in the $10-$70 range.)

A couple notes on mailing stuff -- think about what you want to send and how difficult it will be to send. Stuff happens (including boxes getting dropped), so you want to send insured but you don't want to spend $60 to get a set of pieces to a show. If the pieces fit in a standard USPS mailing box and aren't a special weird size, it's easier for everyone to handle and cheaper on you. Although I have some 36 inch canvasses, I don't bother sending them. I send only the small, light stuff.

So cherry pick stuff for shows. Things will sell in one area and not in another, and you will have NO idea why. Tell folks they can email you and you will contact them as new pieces are available on your website.

Even if ALL you do is simply display it, send along a brochure and/or business cards because that's where you get followup business from.

I'm in Dallas (no secret about that!)

I think the pullout is wise -- the poor owner is having a lot of trouble and while the fundraiser may keep things together for a bit, the handwriting is kinda on the wall.

I'd like to make the suggestion that you talk to another artist from that gallery and when you find a suitable art show, that you see about going to one together. You'll want to talk to the organizer and to the workers to see how they set up and handle things. This will make you better informed about how the workers and directors see the incoming art, what you can do to make them happy (this helps) and get some tips on how to pack your art for better sales.

Hope that helped!

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
