I am not an expert on any of this (except the Wonders of AllWebCo)...

In Response To: Maamaw- a question about Allwebco and the board (Carla Ball)

I have no clue, and that never happens to me so I can't even guess.  Maybe someone else has an idea??

> Now Allwebco, it is time for me to s##t or get off the pot. I got a email

Yup, it's time.

> Will allwebco transfer my info from my
> free site to my new site.

I don't know if they will actually transfer your site -- I think not.

They will take care of transferring your domain name and help you if your old registrar holds it hostage.  That's what I was referring to.

> I just don't have the time to redo an entire site.

NO no no no no!!

You never have to *redo* anything when you transfer a site -- at least you shouldn't have to!!

How did you do your site in the first place?  How did you get your files uploaded to the free site?  You must have the files on your computer, right?

Assuming you do, all you have to do is download an FTP program to transfer the files.

I swear by CuteFTP and you can use the free trial version for a month, at which point it's cheap to register -- $29 last time I checked -- and you're going to need such a program anyway in order to maintain your own website.  Another option is WS_FTP, but I don't like that one myself.

Actually you *can* upload your files one at a time without downloading an FTP program.  AllWebCo gives you an online control panel and you can do it a file at a time through there, but if you have more than a few pages, I think that would be more trouble than it's worth after a while.

If for some reason you don't have your web site on your own hard drive, you can go to each of your pages, right click, and "save page as."  Either way, you absolutely have to get those files on your computer, then uploading them to your new website is fast and easy, and you never have to redo anything.

> I did love all the templetes the had and the prices seen very fair.

I think the price is outstanding considering the features and the LEVEL OF SERVICE they provide -- that's the most important consideration for me, because I have been known to gum things up a time or two.

> My
> name is available, if you were me, would you go with that or
> Carla' Stained Glass Creations?

If I were you, I would get both of those -- if I could afford them, even if I had to register them (the "extras" so to speak) through one of the dirt-cheap registrars (but I would *not* trust my main domain to a cheap alternative).  These secondary domains I would redirect to my main domain.

If I were you (again, I'm no expert), I would not use either of those for my main domain name.  I would choose something like "StainedGlassByCarlaBall" or "StainedGlassByCarla" or something with "stained glass" first.

> Can I use my name, then use the other in
> the title?

The title on the page?  It can be anything you want.  It doesn't have to match your domain name, as far as I know, but again, it can't hurt if it does.

I chose to follow Sunil Tanna's recommendations to the letter and use the exact same wording in the title tag as in the H1 tag as in the link hierarchy that will go on every page, and it has worked very well for me... but you'll want to focus on your keywords, not your personal name unless it becomes well known, IMHO.

If I were you, my first step would be to make sure my entire website is on my own hard drive.

Then I would register my main domain name through AllWebCo.

Next, I would set up hosting with AllWebCo.

Once the site is activated, I would download a trial copy of CuteFTP, create my directories, and upload the files.

That's all it takes to get up and running!

One thing, though -- I would see about redirecting your free site to your new site, and if you can't "redirect" it per se, at least put up a "we have moved" page.  I wouldn't even think of dropping it cold turkey.

Did that help a bit?

P.S.  For anyone else reading this, I recommend AllWebCo because they're the BEST on the planet, IMHO.  I've been with them forever (literally, their forever and my forever-on-the-net), and they have been nothing short of magnificent.  I don't get a dime for referrals because they don't have an affiliate program anymore; I use my old affiliate link because it still works and I want them to know I still (and will always) appreciate them, and the only way I can show it is by sending people their way, and I do so proudly.  Trust me... you won't be disappointed!

(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
