1-up and 2-up plans seem designed to extract the easy sales made by newbies, and compensate the folks who brought them in. No other legitimate purpose I can discern. Everybody sees to have *one* stupid friend to spend $3800, but they won't have 2 or 3 usually.

As has been said before, MULTI-LEVEL means the compensation gets split off through multiple layers of distributors. 1-up and 2-up are what's called "direct sales" plans because (after the first training sale) the money goes right to you as if you're selling stuff on Ebay. Your efforts directly benefit you, and not the participant who brought you in. They've already taken their loot from your first sale!
The designers of 1-up and 2-up plans want you to think they're more fair, in that you get to keep more of your subsequent sales. But they hide the truth that most folks make zero or one sale, and never get to cash in themselves. The burnouts and frustrated ones don't write testimonials, so they disappear from the face of the earth compared to the few successful sales artists.
This is not a defense of 1-up plans, since I still think they're generally abusive and manipulative scams, but to lump them in with abusive and manipulative MLM programs is imprecise. They're to be scorned for slightly different reasons, if I'm being clear.
