The arguement you making using is a strawman used extensively by liberal politicians. The comparison is meaningless. The only honest way to compare current and historic prices is to correct for inflation.
And to state, as you did, that the ratio of minimum wage to gas prices means that over half the minimum wage earners income is spent on fuel is not only flawed, but blatently dishonest as well.
If that same person bought a Big Mac Combo for $6.00 would you claim that they were spending 115% of their income on fast food?

> A little research revealed the following interesting numbers:
> 1974:
> Minimum wage - $2.00/hour
> Average gas price per gallon - $0.36
> So in 1974 gas per gallon was approximately 18% of the total wages being
> earned of those collecting minimum wage
> 1980:
> Minimum wage - $3.10/hour
> Average gas price per gallon - $1.20
> Thus in 1980 gas per gallon was approximately 28% of the total wages
> earned by those collecting minimum wage
> 1991:
> Minimum wage - $4.25/hour
> Average gas price per gallon - $1.30/gallon
> Thus in 1991 gas per gallon was approximately 30% of the total wages
> earned by those collecting minimum wage
> 1997:
> Minimum wage - $5.15/hour
> Average gas price per gallon - $1.40
> Thus in 1997 gas per gallon was approximately 27% of the total wages
> earned by those collecting minimum wage
> Current:
> Minimum wage - federal - $5.15/hour
> Minimum wage - Florida - $6.40/hour
> Average gas price per gallon - $3.00
> Thus currently the price per gallon of gas takes up over 50% of the monies
> earned by those who make the current federal minimum wage and even here in
> Florida where the minimum wage is $1.25 higher per hour the current price
> of gas per gallon take up over 40% of the income earned.
> So to those who say that gas is actually cheaper than it was 20 years ago
> when you compare income, these figures simply don't match that stance. The
> simple fact is that the people who are being hurt the most by the current
> gas price trends are the very ones who can least afford it. And even those
> who earn more than minimum wage are paying more of their percentage of

> My wife works as a manager of a major retail store and they start their

> barely covering their fuel cost just to get to work.
> The bottom line as far as I am concerned is really simple. There is no

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
