I'm going to school. I am determined to have that degree. School is 50 miles away, and there are no buses or trains that go there. I can't move there because husband has a job that's only 15 minutes away from the house. Traffic is heavy and he's not a young man and no buses go by both our house and the workplace. By the time he drove to a "park and ride" for the buses, he'd be almost at work. His only option would be to car pool.
I'm trying to find a car pool, myself.
When I can afford it (when my poor old car finally falls apart), I'm looking for a hybrid.
Things have changed greatly in our lifetimes. The "take a bus or walk or bike" solution really isn't possible for many who live in sprawling cities with poor public transportation to the suburbs. Better urban planning would address this, but cities often have needs that are more urgent than building high speed trains and bus lines.
