I switched from High Speed cable to Verizon DSL (the slowest package - $14.95/mo).
I did it because I need to save money for now. Otherwise I would have never switched as my cable was very reliable and I loved it.
Would I recommend Verizon DSL? Well, yes if you really have to save the money. No, if you don't. The service is VERY terrible.
As far as peed, well, I cannot tell the difference when I am just surfing websites. However I can tell the difference when I am downloading large file and I can DEFNITELY tell when I am uploading files to my websites via FTP. The upload stream is very sloe. Not even 200K. Download is something like almost 800K but not quite so it's decent.
I know you are thinking of going with AT&T and not Verizon but I'm sure it will be the same as my Verizon both from a speed standpoint and a tech support standpoint. You get what you pay for.
I wouldn't go with AT&T for anything because they keep merging and selling out to other companies with almost every venture they get into. And switches can sometimes be frustrating.
You might want to look into Verizon if you need to save money. Also, since you are in California, you might want to check out DSLExtreme.com. They have cheap DSL as well, but only in California, though.
You can bet your arse that when I can afford it, I will be going back to cable. I'm not going to upgrade to a faster DSL package. I would rather have cable. I thought the service waa MUCH better.
