Kim,
you have come to the right place. Maw Maw is pretty strict about scammers posting on her forum. There are plenty of regular posters that offer great advice on different types of businesses.
I will offer you some advice based on my experiences. First of all, don't go on the Web "looking" for "opportunities". You WILL get scammed. So here is what you should do first. Get a fresh sheet of blank paper and a pen. Make sure you have no distractions for about 20 min to 1/2 hour. Write down ANY topic that interests you, and I do mean ANYTHING. Do not hesitate to write down any word, no matter how stupid, mundane, or impractical it sounds. The words can be anything: "soap", "watching sunsets", "knitting",""Nascar", "geophysics", "Nuclear fusion","washing dishes". From this list you will begin to see ideas forming and interests arising.
Now, for each word, think of a possible problem that people could have with that idea/topic/hobby/concept. For example, "soap" - what problem can people have with soap? Hmmm.....they find it hard to buy all-natural soap; find it hard to get a particular scent of soap; they want to lean hoe to make their own (hmm...a soap-making DVD), etc.
From this brainstorming strategy , your mind will be in over-drive as you think of a plethora of things you could do with each interest. It doesn't mean that all wil be viable businesses, but it will get your creative juices flowing.
Strategy #2:
I call this the "gun-to-your-head" strategy:
A person breaks into your house and puts a gun to your head and says, "you have 1/2 hr to tell me 25 things that you could teach me, and you MUST be specific".
On a blank sheet of paper you write down any special skills/talents/hobbies/knowledge that you could teach, counsel or impart to someone else:
Some exampes off the top of my head: Can you sew, teach kids a sport, tutor, cook, clean, collect records, write articles, teach religion, vegetable or flower gardening, weight-loss, exercise, martial arts, fix engines etc. Right away I listed 7-8 examples I could think of, off the top-of-my-head. Now do you have any type of skills/knowledge that you could teach either a group or individual?
People will pay for almost anything they perceive as value. Now look at your list, and forget the "teaching". For each skill listed, think of 2 businesses you could start related around that idea, that don't include counseling, teaching. Write away you will have 75 or so business ideas to work with!
Hope this helped!

PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT. It has been done before, but never successfully. In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace. NEWS FLASH: I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday. I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish. I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?). I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!" Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures. Although we may, from time to time, monitor or review discussions, postings and the like on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, we are under no obligation to do so. You are likewise prohibited from posting any false claims against any company or individual. If you cannot accept or agree with the terms of service for this website and discussion board, you are advised not to post on this board. In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact. And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!). |
