I installed Service Pack 2. It did indeed mess up everything. A friend who teaches computers in a local high school asked me, "What the heck did you do that for?" I uninstalled Service Pack 2 and so far everything is fine, although I have heard a rumor that Microsoft won't support anything w/o Service Pack 2. At this point I'm willing to take my chances.

If you are not running Service Pack 2 then your system is wide open for tons of vulnerabilities that are being abused both actively (Hackers and Script Kiddies) and passively (websites and email). If you have programs that will be messed up by installing SP2 then you might consider uninstalling those programs, installing SP2, then reinstalling the programs after SP2. I know it sounds like a lot of work, but the number of fixes in SP2 is worth it.
The reason Micro-Soft (yes, there is a dash but they hide it in the logo art) will not support XP without SP2 is that SP1 and lower is full of so many major security holes that supporting those versions would be a huge liability. Micro-Soft has also discontinued support for all builds of Windows NT, 95, and 98. It would also be a safe bet that they will discontinue support for all of Windows 2000 once the home, pro, and server versions of Windows Vista come out. It would be a huge cost saving on their part since they would then only be supporting Windows XP (home/pro), Windows Server 2003, and all the versions of Vista.
