From my experience in MLM, while it might be somewhat limited (everything is relative) - most people are always focused on getting people below them more than anything else.
The key to being successful beyond picking a good program (consumables that people use over and over again is my preference) is first and foremost begin to set up your structure well, this done by selling. You, yourself selling the product. In order to have good people below you the best thing to do is to properly train them and teach them. The only way to really do that is if you, yourself have heard the pushback and know the true benefits of the products and what your customers like about the products.
Then once you have begun to sell decently, begin to get people who are actually going to do something with their MLM membership. If you expect people to just make you money its not going to happen.
You need to show them how to make it work and you need to be sure you get the correct type of people under you. That is the biggest problem with MLM, many people join becuase they were "sold well" on some sort of quick riches. And that is not what MLM is, by no means it is quick riches. But if you do it correclty, you can be quite successful.
