In Response To: I hate linking (Louise)

Hi Louise,

> Is linking still that important for SEO?

One of my keywords is "homebusiness" — yes the two words are run together because that is how some people search for it in a search prompt. On Google (after the sponsored links) I come up in 5th place.

5th place is a rather exalted position for me. I have never studied SEO, care nothing about links, back-links, any links, designing my site to be SEO friendly, and really couldn't care less, where I am in the search engines.

But... they seem to love me.

Google shows 127 sites linking to mine. And it looks like it has links to 13,200 pages from my site, although I highly doubt there is anywhere close to that amount of pages on my site. Google also shows about 18,000 pages linking to my site (although some of these appear to be direct links to my site.

As admitted, I have never tried any SEO tactics; don't know much about it; don't really care about it. I don't pretend to know anything. But if you do a whois search, you won't find any contact information hidden. If you do a search on joint registry and stocks one would find that HomeBusiness Websites is a registered, licensed business. My website and I are as credible as they come. Maybe that's why? I've been providing the Internet community with resources, advice, help and genuine good-will, for years. As a matter of fact, I used to work for free (many years ago) until I was getting so many requests for help that I didn't have any time left for myself.

See, now I'm going to go off on Steve's old rant about what a website is.

A website isn't a business. A website is a communications tool for a business owner. The website isn't "be all" or "end all." Certainly, you want to be able to be found in the search engines if someone types something relevant at the search engine prompt. I do understand this is changing. You know, some people are depending on creating niche product websites using Adsense and hoping it will pay their mortgage payment this month. Some are getting lucky; others aren't. And I understand there is a lot of competition to get these sites ranked well in the search engines... mainly Google.

But when you do a search for something on Google, you want the most relevant results returned. I would think one would have to have a lot of original content on an Adsense site to give it any sort of relevancy, and this kind of defeats the purpose of being able to put up 100 or more websites per day.

I guess it could be fair to say that with search engines, you pretty well get what you deserve. If you can "blackhat" your way to the top, you will probably find you won't be there too long. In my humble opinion, getting a high listing in the index was fair, and getting banned was fair.

Best Regards,
Steve MacLellan

NOTICE TO SCUMBEEZLES
(you know who you are... you scream "Foul!" when the truth comes out)
PLEASE READ THIS LEGAL NOTICE CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU FILE A LAWSUIT OR EVEN WASTE TIME THINKING ABOUT IT.  It has been done before, but never successfully.  In fact, the last dodobird who tried it ended up being ordered to pay more than $77,000 in attorney fees ($65,000+ to my attorneys and $12,000+ to my co-defendant's legal advisor).
If your attorney is worth his salt, he's going to tell you that the expense of filing a lawsuit you can't win is a whole lot worse than any "damages" resulting from messages posted on this insignificant little chunk of cyberspace.
NEWS FLASH:  I didn't just climb down off that ol' turnip truck yesterday.  I'm well aware that expressing a negative opinion, relating one's personal experience, and restating provable facts are all legal in this country and do not constitute libel, slander, or defamation -- so you don't want to play games with me, and you sure don't want to start something you aren't prepared to finish.  I don't take threats lightly, and I don't accept bribes (or did you call it a "mutually-beneficial arrangement"?).  I'll turn you in faster than you can yell, "ARREST ME, I'M SCUM!!"
Do yourself a favor and turn your legal team loose in greener pastures.

By posting messages and/or content on the Friends In Business (Scams 101) Message Board, you give permission for Lesley Fountain/Friends In Business/Shoestring Success Publications to display, distribute and use the posting and content for publication, advertising, promotion, excerption or example.         In closing, I would like to remind you once again that it is still legal, in this great country of ours, to express a PERSONAL OPINION, as long as it is presented as opinion and not as fact.
And finally, all you scammers out there will do well to remember that TRUTH IS AN ABSOLUTE DEFENSE against charges of libel, defamation, and slander... so if you're operating just a hop, skip, and jump ahead of the law, you might want to think twice before doing anything stupid... (AND SHAME ON YOU!!).
